The gap between a great story and a published book

The gap between having a powerful story and having a published book is not about writing ability. It is about knowing how the publishing industry actually works — what acquisitions editors look for, how to structure a proposal that commands a serious offer, and which agents represent the kind of book you are writing.

Most people who approach publishing do so blind. They write a query letter, send it into the void, and wait. The results are predictable: form rejections, silence, or worse — a deal that undersells the true potential of their work.

Fabian Lyon has spent 17 years at the intersection of storytelling, journalism, and public life. He understands narrative structure at its deepest level, has relationships throughout the media and literary world, and knows what makes a story publishable versus merely interesting.

"Every book I've helped shepherd began as a conversation about what someone truly had to say — not what they thought publishers wanted to hear. The strongest deals are built on authenticity, architecture, and timing."

Kingston 3 is not a conventional literary agency. We bring together media strategy, narrative architecture, and publishing industry access to give your book the best possible foundation — before it ever reaches an agent's desk.

Our approach to literary representation

We begin where all good literary work begins: with the story itself. What is your book truly about? What makes it necessary right now? Who is the reader, and why will they feel seen by your pages? These are not marketing questions — they are the foundational questions that determine whether your proposal gets a second read or a polite pass.

Once we have built a compelling narrative framework for your book, we develop a professional-grade proposal that represents your work with the precision and polish that major publishers expect. We then identify the agents and editors who are the right fit — not a mass blast, but a curated, strategic approach based on real industry knowledge.

Throughout negotiations, Fabian serves as your advocate and interpreter, helping you understand the fine print, the leverage points, and the long-term implications of every deal term.

Beyond the deal: launch strategy

A book deal is only the beginning. The real work — and the real opportunity — is in how you launch. Kingston 3 brings its full media strategy toolkit to book launches, ensuring that your publication date is not just an event but a media moment that amplifies your platform, earns major press, and converts casual readers into committed advocates for your work.

The Journey

Your book, step by step

01

Story Discovery

We begin with a deep-dive conversation to understand your story, your expertise, your platform, and your publishing goals. Not every story is ready for the market — and knowing the difference is the first act of good representation.

02

Narrative Architecture

We construct the structural and conceptual framework of your book — the thesis, the arc, the unique angle that separates your work from the hundred others on that topic. This stage is where most projects are won or lost.

03

Proposal Development

We write a publishing proposal that reads like the best editorial pitch you have ever seen — because that is exactly what it is. Overview, sample chapters, author platform, market analysis, competitive landscape. Built to open doors.

04

Agent & Publisher Strategy

We identify the agents and acquisitions editors most likely to respond enthusiastically to your specific book. This is a curated, relationship-based approach — not a mass submission to every address in a directory.

05

Deal Negotiation & Close

When offers come in, we help you understand every element of the deal — advance, royalties, subsidiary rights, publication timeline — and advocate for terms that protect your long-term interests, not just the initial number.

06

Launch Strategy

Publication day is a platform-building event. We build a media and promotional strategy around your launch that amplifies your book's reach, earns major press coverage, and positions you for the next chapter of your public platform.

What's Included

Full-spectrum literary support

Book Proposal Writing

A fully written, professionally formatted book proposal including overview, chapter outline, sample writing, author bio, platform assessment, market analysis, and competitive titles. Built to meet the standard of top literary agents.

Platform Building Strategy

Publishers invest in authors with platforms. We develop a strategy to build and demonstrate your existing platform — whether through media appearances, speaking, social presence, or a growing readership — in ways that make your proposal more compelling.

Agent Introductions

Our relationships in the literary world mean warm introductions — not cold queries. We identify agents who represent similar books, prepare targeted submission materials, and facilitate direct connections where appropriate.

Pre-Publication PR

The period between signing a deal and your pub date is invaluable for building anticipation. We deploy earned media strategy — excerpts, profiles, podcast appearances — to ensure your book has real momentum before it hits shelves.

"A book is not just a product. It is the most permanent version of your thinking that will ever exist. It deserves to be built with the same rigor and intentionality that goes into any great piece of journalism."

Common Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a completed manuscript to work with you?
Not at all. Most nonfiction books are sold on proposal before the manuscript is written. We can begin working with you at the idea stage. For fiction, a complete manuscript is typically required before approaching agents.
What if I already have an agent?
We still have significant value to offer. Our narrative architecture work strengthens manuscripts and proposals regardless of where they are in the process. We also bring media and PR expertise that most literary agents don't provide.
What types of books do you represent?
Our strength is in narrative nonfiction — memoir, journalism, business, cultural commentary, biography, and thought leadership. We also work with public figures developing books that extend an existing media platform.
How long does it take to get a book deal?
The timeline varies widely depending on the strength of your platform, the competitiveness of your concept, and how quickly agents respond. A well-positioned proposal with a strong platform can move quickly — sometimes within months. We set realistic expectations from the start.
Can you help with self-publishing instead?
Yes. For certain books and certain goals, self-publishing is the right choice. We can help you develop the editorial, marketing, and media strategy that makes self-publishing as powerful as traditional publishing — without waiting for gatekeepers.
